CHANGE THIS CLIMATE! NOW!

Greta Thunberg (if you don’t know who she is, it’s a crying shame), a school kid (and potential Nobel laureate) that doesn’t go to school on Fridays and has convinced many to be on strike with her for the climate, asks a very innocent question, with her incisors, “Some people say that we should be in school instead, but why should we be studying for a future that soon will be no more? And when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save that future…what is the point of learning facts within the school system, when the most important facts given by the finest science of that same school system clearly mean nothing to our society?”

When children’s voices fall on deaf ears, we know we’re a rotting mass of flesh and bones. No heart. And most definitely no brains.
And since we’re venting with anatomical allegories, our lungs are smoked too. Our forests are going, going, gone. Which shall amount to the impossibility to ventilate in next to no time.

We’re ailing. The whole planet is. And not enough of us are doing anything to prevent, cure or ease the pain.

Children can’t vote. How do they make a point? By not going to school. That’s what Greta does. Every Friday of every week, until Sweden is in line with the Paris Agreement. Although, she’s very shy and doesn’t talk much, when she truly wants something, she doesn’t back down. When your children desire to talk to you; share their problems with you, you stop everything and listen to them. There is nothing more important than that. Because their problem, in point of fact, is ours too.

The climate around the world is changing. It’s hot when it has to be cold and cold when it has to be hot. And raining when it shouldn’t. And extreme and unbearable in parts that it never has been. Which should bring us to the realization that our house is on fire. In a bad way. It is.

Our economic advancements have come with an unthinkable price tag. On our climate change report cards, we have to acknowledge that we have failed.

But, what if there’s still time? To turn everything around. May be we can still fix this.

The children protesting have the answer: We have to stop the emission of greenhouse gases.
It really is that simple.
Either we do it or we don’t.
Either we let our organs fail and rot or we treat them in time and save them and make them perform their functions to sustain us. To help us thrive. Or we don’t.
Either we choose to go on as a civilization or we don’t.
It’s as black or white as that.

Before the damage is irreversible, we must change the climate – everything in our current societies.
The bigger your carbon footprint, the bigger your moral duty.
The bigger your arena, the bigger your responsibility.

Our children are afraid.
They don’t want our “hopes” for a better, safer, healthier future.
They want us to panic. As much as we do to ensure they get to school on time. Or get to school at all. And then return home when they’re done; when they’re late; when they’re missing.
Right now, the planet requires your panic. It’s missing your care and your concern. And while we are late, we aren’t done for. Treat it like you would your child. It’s only throwing one tantrum – “To Change This Climate. Now!”.
Indulge it.
Give in.
Act as if you would in a crisis.
Give in, so we know you haven’t given up.

Thank you ‘Greta’!
In this most fitting coincidence of a name, although we could, we don’t have to swap two letters to tell you’re ‘Great’!
Because you are!
