FROM DARKNESS TO DAWN

Anusha Kaul Datta wrote two poems, a few years apart.
At a time when, in her own words, she was wet clay.
And later, crudely but truly put, when she was a little baked.

“It’s not only the passage of time but also experience that leaves a mark”, she explains. “Experiences act similar to the effect of baking the clay. Once that heat and fire is introduced to the substance, then it turns into a material that cannot be moulded and shaped again and again!”

The hope shall remain to see, to feel and offer ourselves flexibility.
So that we may be kinder and brighter to the world, ultimately.

Take her two pieces with you.
They will likely align with two pieces of you.

DARKNESS

Do you ever stumble upon a moment…Dark and calm.
Like when the moon is covered by the
Sheath of motionless clouds?
A spectral, a menacing face
And in all that silence and blackness
She choked, as if under a spell.
No words fit for description,
No emotion worthy to exclaim.
She knew that moment won’t last
Never is such beauty everlasting. It never is.
Yet in its ghastly glory,
No branch dared to dance, no leaf risked to gesture.
Even she knew as to hold that rigid stance.
Never is such beauty everlasting. It never is.
And as the wind caressed her cheek
She watched that sheath reveal…
That was her moment of calm.

DAWN

The Aura of Hope.

Unlike the grasp of Maya,
Hope is here to set you free.

In these wee hours
Before we wake to our rooted troubles
Of Despair and Sadness
I like to think of Hope.
Hope at dawn is like a feeling
Of living in a phantasy.
And waiting to wake to something better,
If not ones circumstances,
One’s self.
A better I.
A better You.
And a collective We.
Trying every day to be better
Than our past selves.

Amidst this bubble of chaos.
Find your better self and in that journey,
She will side you as a loyal spirit animal.

Hope, will accompany you
In ways you cannot fathom.
And Hope, will set you free.

These are two poems in a series of many. We hope we can have more from this poet, visual media artist and documentary filmmaker. One look at her profile and it’s easy to tell we will! Anusha, thank you for the clay and the wisdom. (And a fitting artwork!).
