LETTER FIFTEEN

Dearest X,

Melancholy is not easy to deal with at any age.
Your words, thoughts and feelings are melancholic right now.
And while that may be understandable, it is not a condition anyone must linger in too long.
The world suffers every now and then and we suffer with it.
What carries us though that suffering is hope – never mind how much of a mirage it seems to be at this moment.

“There is nothing quite so tragic as a young cynic, because it means the person has gone from knowing nothing to believing nothing,”
– Maya Angelou.

Now, while I certainly don’t believe you know nothing, I do believe you’re too young to be this sad.
You need hope X. You need to find it by going out there and wanting to make a difference in the world.

Go, look into the eyes of a child in rural India.
What do you see?
If there is despair and deprivation, can you change that into hope and fill their mind with knowledge?
Can you empower them with opportunity?
Can you plant a dream in those eyes or help them see it for themselves?
Can you bring them out of their melancholy?

May be that will help you get over yours.

Write to me when you have a plan.
Preferably, a plan with a curriculum, a confirmed ticket to where you’re taking it and words that water flowers.
Because that’s what you’re about to do for those children – water the flowers that their lives are: fragile, beautiful, colourful and in need of nurturing.

Sending you all the Sun you need,

Prof. Gyaan.
